Course DescriptionThis course is designed for students who are passionate about animals and interested in the Animal Care Industry. Students will learn about animal nutrition, anatomy and safe handling techniques, animal first aid and the correct administer of medication. Theoretical work will be completed in sessions at Oakbank Area School with practical work occurring at Oakbank Area School, local Pastoral Properties and Monarto Zoo. Practical workshops involve working with domestic animals, wildlife and livestock. This course is delivered over an intensive 1 year period (this best suits animal growth and animal husbandry cycles. Students are expected to have prior exposure to caring for animals (ie pet, farming or work experience). Students may continue their studies into the second year if required.
PathwaysFurther education pathway – This program will provide very useful underpinning knowledge for the following fields and study: Animal Science, Veterinary Bioscience, Veterinary Nursing, Pet Styling, Livestock Agent. Career pathway by successful completion of units of competency within this qualification, students will earn SACE points towards ATAR for furthering animal care related career options such as Veterinarians, Vet Nursing, Parks and Wildlife/Zoos, Wildlife Rescue, Pet Industry, Animal Welfare – RSPCA, Working Dog Training, Life Stock Agent, Stock Feed Merchant.
Entry RequirementsStudents in Year 11 will need to demonstrate a genuine interest or experience in this industry. Students in Year 11 will also need to undertake the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process in Semester 2, 2021 via a referral process completed at their Home School using an online form. Once the Home School has completed the referral process, students will be required to undertake a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment to demonstrate sufficient literacy and numeracy ability.
Other RequirementsStudents must arrange their own animal care work placement in conjunction with their school. Rubber soles work boots required.

This training cost may vary in 2022 and does not include consumables.

This training cost is the gap fee payable after subsidised government funding from the Department for Innovation and Skills (VFSS). First year costing is $1,625.00 and second year is a further $1,625.
