Course Description | This course is designed for students who are passionate about animals and interested in the Animal Care Industry. Students will learn about animal nutrition, anatomy and safe handling techniques, animal first aid and the correct administer of medication.
Theoretical work will be completed in sessions at Oakbank Area School with practical work occurring at Oakbank Area School, local Pastoral Properties and Monarto Zoo.
Practical workshops involve working with domestic animals, wildlife and livestock.
This course is delivered over an 18-month period based around animal growth and husbandry cycles. Students are expected to have prior exposure to caring for animals (ie pet, farming or work experience). Students may continue their studies into the second year.

Pathways | Possible student pathways after successful completion of this course include: Animal Science, Veterinary Bioscience, Veterinary Nursing, Pet Styling, Livestock Agent, Parks and Wildlife/Zoos, Wildlife Rescue, Pet Industry, Animal Welfare – RSPCA, Working Dog Training and Stock Feed Merchant. |
Entry Requirements | Students will undertake the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process in Semester 2, 2022 via a referral process completed at their Home School using an online from. Once the Home School has completed the referral process, students will be required to undertake a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment to demonstrate sufficient literacy and numeracy ability. |
Other Requirements | Students must arrange their own animal care work placement in conjunction with their school.
Rubber soled work boots required for field trips and access to a laptop computer to be used for workshops and for online assessment submission. |
Dates and Times | 78 weekly sessions at Oakbank Area School on Thursdays from 08:15 until 04:45. Commencement date 08/02/24. 78 weekly sessions at Oakbank Area School on days and times to be confirmed. |
Work Placement | 20 days 120 hours work placement in an animal care related industry (For Example vets, dog wash, animal shelters, livestock production, equine facility, wildlife rescue etc). |
SACE Details | SACE Stage 2, 120 SACE credits SACE credits upon satisfactory completion of the whole certificate. Can be used to attract an ATAR. |

Training Cost | $3,450.00 GST exempt This training cost may vary in 2024 and does not include consumables but includes GST for materials.
This training cost is the gap fee payable after subsidised government funding from the Department for Innovation and Skills- subject to eligibility criteria (VFSS). First invoice is $1,500.00 charged in February 2024, July 2024 and February 2025.
Non-member schools - an admin levy of $250.00 per student.

Selection Process | Students will need to undertake the following as part of the selection process for this course:
1. Attend a course information session with parent/caregiver
2. Submit with the VETRO online form, details of their experience with animals and outline their goals/pathways that this course will support them to achieve
3. Undertake an Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN) including completing a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment
4. Attend an interview with RST to discuss their goals and work placement plans |
Orientation Details | Students will be required to complete an Orientation Day in early 2024. Date to be confirmed. |
Public Transport | Students are expected to provide their own transport to the delivery location. Busses will be provided for transport for field trips held at other locations. Students will need to provide signed consent forms for attending field trips. |
