Course DescriptionThis course is delivered at a farming workplace, where available, with theory delivered at school sites and online learning. This course is delivered over an 18 month to 2 year period and can be made available where there is a continual intake of students throughout the year. Students are invited to spend time at the RST on the Yorke Peninsula to operate machinery such as tractor, backhoe, excavator and telehandler until competency can be achieved. Delivery hours may vary according to the desired industry segment and previous experience of students. Refer to RST website for further information: www/rst.edu.au/program/primary-production
PathwaysPossible student pathways after successful completion of this course include: Animal Cattle Farmhand, Dairy Farmhand, Farm Worker, Feedlot Feeding and Milling Hand, Feedlot Maintenance Hand, Livestock Transporter, Piggery Attendant, Poultry Hand, Station Hand (Sheep and Wheat), Station Hand (Sheep and Wool), Stud Farm Worker and Farmhand (Grain).
Entry RequirementsStudents will undertake the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process in Semester 2, 2023 via a referral process completed at their Home School using an online from. Once the Home School has completed the referral process, students will be required to undertake a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment to demonstrate sufficient literacy and numeracy ability.
Other RequirementsSafety work boots, long sleeved cotton shirt (preferably hi-viz), and long pants, either denim or cotton drill are required along with a lap ton for workshops and assessments and a smart phone.

Workshops are scheduled throughout the school term on Days and times to be confirmed. Some workshops/training may be held during school holidays (eg Welding and Machinery Operations training).
Work Placement30 days
Approximately one month of work placement is required to be completed over the length of the course
SACE DetailsSACE Stage 2, 140 SACE credits
SACE credits upon satisfactory completion of the whole certificate. Can be used to attract an ATAR.

Units are indicative only. During the enrolment process, RST staff will work with students and school to develop a tailored training plan that targets the student’ areas of interest and the skills they need to enter the Agricultural industry.
Training Cost$900.00 GST exempt
This training cost may vary in 2023 and does not include consumables but includes GST for materials

This training cost is the gap fee payable after subsidised government funding from the Department for Innovation and Skills (VFSS).



Non-member schools - an admin levy of $250.00 per student.

Selection ProcessStudents will need to undertake the following as part of the selection process for this course: 1. Submit with the VETRO online form, details of their experience with Agriculture/Primary Production Industry outline their goals/pathways that this course will support them to achieve 2. Undertake an Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN) including completing a Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment 3. Attend a welcome call with RST to discuss their goals and work placement plans
Orientation DetailsStudents will be required to complete an Orientation Day in early 2024. Date to be confirmed.
Public TransportStudents are expected to provide their own transport to the delivery location and for workshops/field trips held at other locations.
